Things that are free or discounted when fostering
Foster carers are typically paid an allowance for the child they look after and a low fee for their involvement in the fostering task. Sparks Foster carers aren’t as dependent on free or discounted items as some foster carers – indeed, some carers don’t receive enough allowance or fees to meet the costs of the child.
At Sparks Fostering we believe the foster carers should be given a fair fee for the professional part of the fostering role – a lengthy assessment, regular supervision and training, record keeping and attendance at multi-agency meetings. None of our foster carers are dependent on discounts when they wish to treat the child, reward the child for any success or take the child away for a break.
That said, it is useful to know what is available, so a list is provided here:
-
Sparks Fostering arranges free family days out every few months for the whole fostering family and the families of staff.
-
Sparks Fostering also pays the costs when foster carers meet up with each other, to encourage relationship-building between foster carers.
-
Sparks Fostering gives foster carers a monthly budget to source any additional training that interests them.
-
Sparks Fostering pays for regular English tuition for children new to the country.
-
Sparks Fostering offers membership to The Fostering Network, Foster Talk or any other fostering service for foster carers who feel they would benefit from it.
-
Some councils give a council tax break to foster carers.
-
All foster carers can apply for a free Blue Light Card, for discounts on a range of activities and purchases.
-
The ‘Max Card’ is provided by local authorities and selected charities across the UK. Similar to the Blue Light Card, the Max Card offers discounts on a range of purchases.
-
Foster carers may claim Universal Credit, Disability Living Allowance or Carer’s Allowance if they are eligible.
